Birkenhead in Bloom 2024!

This July we’ve been delighted to welcome a panel of Judges from Birkenhead in Bloom, who came along to cast an eye over our wonderful, community-led planters. Sandra and Roy joined us from the RHS, while Simon and Helen were the Wirral Council experts who came down to give us their verdicts.

Beady-eyed passers by might have noticed that we have been able to get a few more beautiful wooden planters installed along Argyle Street, to complement the two we previously heaved into place on Market Street!

We are delighted to have received support from local businesses who are enjoying the extra colour and don’t mind doing a bit of watering on the odd occasion we have a sunny day around here.

We were lucky to have some sunshine as the judges visited and admired some of the edible planting we have on market street, with a few highlights including the strawberry plants, Citronella and the rampant mint that just keeps spreading. They were particularly interested in how we use the edible herbs in our Place of Contribution, and subsequently were fascinated by all the different things we get up to in POC!

The planters really wouldn’t be what they are today without our fantastic community members, who have put many hours into their design and care, planting them up to create a mixture of colour and taste that keeps them interesting at all times of the year. A huge thank you to you all, and we’re delighted you’ve enjoyed it so much.

Looking to the future, these planters have a special purpose as they will be signposting towards a new community garden sited alongside the upcoming Dock Branch Park project, just one of the many ‘meanwhile’ projects upcoming as part of the regeneration opportunity Birkenhead has over the coming years, and which the Dock Branch Community Panel will be supporting.

Our team member Claire said: "I felt proud and privileged to take the judges and council around and it epitomised the core values of the project behind the planters and the engagement from RHS showed they were genuinely interested, taking photos of some of the great creative projects in POC! "
